History

At the dawn of the 20th century, a small wholesaler of hides, furs and wool first opened its doors on historic Morris Avenue in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. Since 1900, Birmingham Hide & Tallow Company, Inc. has had one business philosophy: take care of your customers, and the rest will take care of itself.

In the mid-1930’s, the Vickers family purchased the business from the original proprietor, and a family tradition was born. Originally from Lebanon, Tennessee, the Vickers migrated south to Alabama to first work in, and eventually acquire the business. Since the Great Depression, the Vickers family has been devoted to serving customers throughout the Southeastern United States.

An Original Recycler – BHT has been recycling and repurposing food products for more than a century. As recycling has gains in popularity, we are proud of our heritage of environmental responsibility. As we like to say, BHT is part of Rendering – The Original Green Industry!

BHT is currently led by a third generation family member, Owen Vickers, who serves the company as Chief Executive Officer and President. Though the industry has changed considerably through the years, Owen and his predecessors have successfully navigated these changes by adhering to the original principals of the founders – caring for the customer.

Birmingham Hide & Tallow Company has grown into an industry leader and technological innovator. Now operating as BHT ReSources, our service area encompasses seven states throughout the Southeast. Despite our growth, we pride ourselves on excellent, personal customer service. And we are heavily invested in routing and dispatching resources to continuously improve our ability to respond to customer needs.
